The term firewater stems from the early days of alcohol trading; to prove the alcohol content of a distilled beverage, a trader would expose it to fire. If the beverage was of high proof, it would catch fire - thus "firewater."

American Indians are commonly cited as the origin of this practice and, thus, the word.

Firewater takes similar root to the concept of proof.
