Ethylene

The simplest alkene (double-bonded hydrocarbon), ethylene is also called ethene and has the chemical formula C2H4. It is a plant hormone that causes fruits to ripen, flowers to open and leaves to shed. It is also used for the industrial production of ethanol, by catalytic hydration.
